The Balloon Fiesta started as a radio station birthday promo!
Pilot Sid Cutter organized the 1972 event to celebrate KOB radio's 50th anniversary, inviting 13 balloonists to launch from a shopping center parking lot. It grew into the world's largest balloon festival.
The Balloon Fiesta pumps ~$186M into New Mexico's economy yearly!
It started in 1972 with just 13 balloons in a mall parking lot. Now drawing 800,000+ visitors over 9 days, it's one of the most photographed events on Earth and NM's biggest annual tourism driver.
