The FEC allows filing deadline extensions and emergency fund use when federal disasters strike a campaign's operating area. At least 12 Senate races since 2000 have had operations disrupted by hurricanes or floods.
Candidates 'suspend' campaigns — not 'end' them — for legal reasons.
Suspending (vs. ending) a campaign lets candidates retain their FEC-registered committee, keep unspent funds, and potentially re-enter the race. Ending a campaign requires formal dissolution and return of remaining funds.
