UNIFIL (UN Interim Force in Lebanon) was created after Israel's first invasion of Lebanon in March 1978. Now nearly 50 years old, it is one of the longest-running UN peacekeeping missions, with ~10,000 troops from over 40 nations.
Israel occupied southern Lebanon for 18 years before withdrawing in 2000
After its 1982 invasion, Israel maintained a self-declared 'security zone' in S. Lebanon until May 2000. The UN verified withdrawal, but disputes over border areas like Shebaa Farms persisted for years.
A 2006 UN deal was meant to keep Hezbollah out of south Lebanon.
UN Resolution 1701, passed after the 2006 Lebanon War, required Hezbollah to disarm south of the Litani River. It largely failed — Hezbollah rearmed extensively, making the 2024 conflict possible.
