The Lincoln Memorial's basement — sealed for decades — preserves inscriptions left by construction workers. The memorial took 8 years to build and was dedicated on May 30, 1922, with 50,000 attendees.

Beneath the iconic memorial, construction workers from the 1910s left inscriptions and markings on the walls. The space, now open to the public, also houses original building equipment used during the memorial's 1914–1922 construction.
