Navi Pillay helped convict the first person for genocide since Nuremberg!
As a judge on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, Pillay was part of the landmark 1998 Akayesu verdict — the first genocide conviction by an international court since the Nazi war crimes trials.
Pillay grew up under apartheid — it fueled her int'l law career!
Born in Durban, South Africa, Pillay was denied hospital care at a whites-only facility after a car crash. She became the first Black African woman to open a law practice in Natal province.
The Rwanda tribunal cost over $1.8 billion across 21 years.
The Rwanda tribunal (1994–2015) prosecuted 93 individuals and secured 62 convictions — including the landmark ruling that rape can constitute genocide, a precedent Navi Pillay helped establish as its chief judge.
