NASA's Extravehicular Mobility Units (EMUs) were designed in the 1970s and cost ~$150M each. NASA owns 11 suits — a fleet worth over $1.6B — and each one is hand-assembled; they can't be mass-produced.

In 2002, Musk traveled to Russia to buy refurbished ICBMs for a Mars mission. Shocked by the per-rocket price, he flew home and decided to build his own — founding SpaceX that same year in Hawthorne, CA.
