Before 1925, Supreme Court nominees never appeared before the Senate — the Senate simply voted on written records. The practice didn't become routine until the 1950s, making live testimony a surprisingly modern tradition.
For 136 years, no Supreme Court nominee testified at their own hearing!
Justice Harlan Fiske Stone broke the tradition in 1925. Before that, nominees stayed silent as the Senate voted without hearing from them. Televised hearings only became standard after Robert Bork's rejection in 1987.
