The Supreme Court met inside the U.S. Capitol for 135 years.

Until its own building opened in 1935, SCOTUS held sessions in the Capitol — the same building where House GOP leaders now respond to its rulings. Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes called the new building 'wholly American in conception.'

The 14th Amendment was written to overturn the Dred Scott decision!

Ratified in 1868, its citizenship clause directly nullified Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857), which ruled Black Americans couldn't be U.S. citizens. Thomas' dissent challenges how that same clause is applied today.
