A neutral Gulf state, Oman hosted the secret back-channel talks in 2013 that led to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA). The current Trump-Iran negotiations are also reportedly being held in Muscat, Oman's capital.
Trump withdrew from the last Iran nuclear deal in 2018.
The 2015 JCPOA limited Iran's uranium enrichment in exchange for sanctions relief. Trump called it 'the worst deal ever' and pulled out in May 2018 — making him the architect of both its collapse and a potential new agreement.
The US & Iran have had no formal diplomatic ties since 1980
