Sheikh Hamad voluntarily abdicated in 2013 — a first for Gulf rulers.

At just 61, he handed power to son Tamim, becoming the first Gulf Arab ruler to voluntarily step down. He also founded Al Jazeera in 1996, just one year after seizing power from his own father.
