John Wayne reprises his Oscar-winning role as Marshal Rooster Cogburn, the one-eyed fat man who teams up with spinster missionary Eula Goodnight (Katharine Hepburn) to track down a gang of outlaws who have stolen a shipment of nitroglycerin. When the criminals kill Eula's father and several others, she insists on joining Cogburn's pursuit for justice. Along the way, they're joined by Hawk (Richard Jordan), a half-breed tracker, and Wolf (Anthony Zerbe), the ruthless gang leader who proves to be their most dangerous adversary yet.
